Organizing a Pantry on a Budget

As I was getting ready to start this organizing project I walked by my husband with my camera bag and my planners. He gave me a funny look and the following conversation happened.

The Hubs- " What in the world are you doing?"

Me- "I'm tackling the pantry today."

The Hubs- "And you need your camera?"

Me- "Of course I'm a blogger and we take pictures of everything. Technically we're a weird lot."

The Hubs- shakes his head. He thinks I'm quirky and weird. He's probably right but I digress.

My goal for today was to get our sad pantry cleaned out and reorganized. While I admire those slick organizing systems that make pantries pretty my goal was to not spend anything on any new organizing solutions but to use things I already had on hand. Thankfully I had a few empty bins hanging out in the garage that I could use.

Here is what my pantry looked like before I started.

In all honesty it wasn't terribly bad but I really wasn't sure what all I even had in there because it was all just kind of thrown wherever.

I pulled everything out and threw away old, expired items and stuff I knew we wouldn't ever use.

I pulled out the plastic shoe boxes and tubs that I had sitting in the garage and started sorting all the items that belonged together. Once done I arranged it all back in the pantry as neatly as possible. As you can see my systems aren't color coded or pretty but they do add better function to this space. One day I will hopefully be able to organize my home from the Container Store but today isn't that day and this works for now. Kids snacks are on the bottom shelf where they can reach them better.

I've come to the realization that I may be a bouillon base hoarder. That's 8 jars of various bouillon bases. :/

I also set up a lunch station of sorts near the snacks. My kids don't take a lunch to school often but when they do they will be able to easily find everything they need to put one together.

So there it is. My nice clean (for now) pantry. The items I used for containerizing (is that even a word) things were a few bins from Dollar Tree and some plastic shoe boxes that I picked up from Walmart awhile ago. I may still pick up a few more but none of these things cost a lot of money and they will help keep this space organized.
