Our New Compost Set Up

If you remember, back in March I posted about the compost bin we made out of a trash can. While it worked well we quickly realized that it just wasn't going to meet our needs. With 5 people, 4 ducks, and a rabbit there was just too much going in and we were running out of space.

So we moved on and created a 3 bin open compost bin. We still had a good amount of pallets stacked in the yard so it was super easy to build. We also are able to cover the top in order to keep heat in and rain out.

One of the things I love about homesteading is that I'm learning that there is no one right way to accomplish or do things. Being flexible and willing to learn as we go is so beneficial.

We dumped everything from our trash can compost into the first bin compartment and filled it about halfway.

This has been working out well for us. We still are working on filling the first bin but I'm thinking that here in the next couple of weeks we'll start letting it sit and heat up and start filling the second bin. I'm really pleased with how things are coming along. We are still dreaming about living in the country but the dream is slowly starting to come alive right where we are.
