Ikea Spice Rack Into an Essential Oil Organizer

4 years ago, right after we moved to Oregon, my in-laws took us to Ikea for the first time. I plead temporary insanity while there and picked up a few things for our new place including 2 spice racks. I had no idea what I was going to do with them but hey why not.

Pinterest proved full of great ideas for these babies. But I never got around to doing anything with them and they ended up just floating around from place to place.

Last fall I finally hung them up because I thought hey these would be great for organizing my essential oils. They were. At the time I really wanted to paint them but once again I never got around to doing anything with them.

Last weekend though the sun was shining and I had stumbled across some chalk paint the day before and the stars aligned and I was motivated to finally tackle this project.

Can I just start off by saying that this was my first time using chalk paint and I am officially in love! Love! It's so easy to use and it looks wonderful!

First I painted 2 layers of chalk paint in mineral, which is a gray color. I let each application dry for 2 hours in between coats.

The next day I came back and applied a 3rd coat of white and let it dry for 24 hours. I only did 1 coat of white because I wanted the gray to show through after sanding to make it look weathered.

I completely forgot to take pictures of the final step but I ended up taking a sanding sponge and sanding along the edges and surface to give it a well used look.

I am really liking this lighter weathered farmhouse look. It's simple and functional and definitely not the plain eyesore that was in dire need of some sprucing up.

What I used for this project-

Waverly Inspirations Chalk Paint in Mineral and White
Waverly Inspirations Wax in Clear (Protective coat)

Paints and wax were purchased at my local Walmart.
