Tearing down the old duck coop

If you've been following me for awhile you know that after the loss of our ducks we started planning on adding chickens eventually. See A Duck Eulogy

The rainy season set in and those plans got put off, but Spring is right around the corner and our thoughts have once again returned to adding some chickens to our homestead.

Tearing down the old duck coop

Originally we were just going to reuse the coop that we made for the ducks. Upon recent inspection however we realized that it was to wet and drafty inside for chickens. So we decided to tear it apart and start over fresh.

Fortunately we were blessed with some good weather yesterday so we were able to get started.

As we got going we realized that we really didn't need to take everything apart. We are going to leave the base as it is and allow the chickens to be able to use it as shelter.

We turned it around so that the open side was in the back. We'll be fencing the back with a removable panel which will allow easier access for cleaning the coop. The front will have a few boards removed to allow the chickens access to the underside.

After turning it around we trimmed the sides and all rough edges so that it was even and ready to be framed.

From here the coop will get framed and the coop itself will be built on the upper portion of the frame. Today is supposed to be another sunny day before we get more bad weather so fingers crossed that we are able to get more done on this project so we can bring some girls home to roost sooner rather than later.
